Upper Mustang lies in the rain shadow of the north of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massif making it perfect place to do Upper Mustang Trekking in monsoon season as the region doesn't receive rain. You will get to witness barren landscape surrounded by impressive formations of rocks in different colours along with white-washed houses, chortens decorated with prayer flags, and barley fields and gorgeous white mountain.

Upper Mustang Trek will take you to the hidden arid valley of Nepal, which is also known as the old Buddhist kingdom of Mustang. Trekking in the Mustang region is officially started in 1992, however, only limited trekkers are only allowed to visit this region to protect and conserve the tradition and fragile environment. Located far away from bustling cities and technology, Mustang lies in the rain shadow of the north of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massif making it perfect place to do Upper Mustang Trekking in monsoon season as the region doesn’t receive rain. You will get to witness barren landscape surrounded by impressive formations of rocks in different colours along with white-washed houses, chortens decorated with prayer flags, and barley fields. Following the ancient caravan route, you will reach Lo Manthang, the capital of Upper Mustang. You will get to witness spectacular views of Himalayan mountains like Mt. Nilgiri, Mt. Annapurna (8,091 m), Dhaulagiri Range (8,167 m).

Upper Mustang Trek begins with a scenic drive to Pokhara from Kathmandu. You will then fly to Jomsom, one of the most beautiful regions of Nepal. The flight will present you impressive views of the Himalayas. From Jomsom, you will ascend all the way up to Charang via Kagbeni, Chele, Syangboche, and Ghami. The trail will include several ascends and descends through small picturesque villages, large open meadows, and the forested path along with superb views of Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Tukuche, Tilicho Peak, and Yaskawa Kang. You will then ascend towards Lo-Manthan where you will take a day off to acclimate your body as well as explore the region. You will visit several ancient monasteries as well as hike up to the valley to see outstanding views of the walled city of Lo-Manthang. After that, you will descend to Muktinath via Dhakmar, Gelling, and Chhuksang. Muktinath is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites of Hindus. Further, you will trek back to Jomsom and fly to Pokhara and back to Kathmandu.

Tradition & Culture in the Upper Mustang region

Upper Mustang is highly influenced by Tibetan culture and tradition. People here follow Tibetan Buddhism and most of the festivals, assortments, and language are similar to them. You will get to explore some of the ancient monasteries and gompas here. You will see chortens fastened with colourful prayer flags at most of the place. And, not to mention people residing here are one of the kindest you will ever meet in your life.

The Upper Mustang Trek will also take you to Muktinath Temple, which is one of the holiest temples of Hindus worldwide. Every year thousands of pilgrims visit this temple to worship. In Upper Mustang Trek, you will get to experience both Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism.

Upper Mustang Trek difficulty

Upper Mustang Trek is marked as the difficult trek. As you will be ascending every day on a relatively rugged trail along with gaining altitude. You don’t need to have strong physical fitness, however, good stamina is needed. You don’t need to be professional trekker to go on this trek, just before the beginning of the trek go on a few hikes and hit the door of the gym to increase your muscles strengths and stamina, and you are good to go. Also, do consult your doctor to know all the risks you might have to face during the trip.

  • Day 1:

    Arrival Kathmandu, Hotel

    You landing Tribhuvan international airport of the beautiful Himalayan country of Nepal, pick up with our company name tag and drive to hotel approximately 20 minutes. Depending on you and arrival time, If you like to go out to walk and see Kathmandu. We will make you explore the place. Back hotel and brief about a trip, rest at the hotel.

  • Day 2:

    Drive to Pokhara, Hotel

    Driving day to Pokhara 6 to 7 hours long by tourist bus, experience highway of Nepal and view of terrace field, dramatic landscape, famous rafting river Trishuli, meeting friendly people. Pokhara is a beautiful paradise place with Phewa Lake. Walk around Lake and lakeside tourist city. Stay at the hotel.

  • Day 3:

    Fly Jomsom(2750m) and trek to Kagbeni(2820m)

    After nice breakfast at the hotel, leaving for the fly to Jomsom(Jomsom is known as very windy at afternoon ) small domestic craft approximately 20 minutes with a great mountain view of Annapurna range, Nilgiri, and Dhaulagiri range. We can meet up so many tourists here. This is a place people come from different trek trails. Easy going flat walk to Jomsom with most of craggy rock and sand. Super view of huge Mt. Dhaulagiri(8167m), Nilgiri and Tukuche. Kagbeni is a gateway to enter a restricted area of Mustang. We will all paper what we need and do formalities. Stay at the guesthouse.

  • Day 4:

    Trek Kagbeni to Chele

    Today we enter restricted Mustang with all necessary permits. Move forwards by river bank of Kaligandaki to Chukung village crossing Kaligandaki. Now we leave the river up walking to Chele. The walk pass village of whitewashed houses contains an intriguing pattern of alleyways, beautiful scenery of wheat, barley, buckwheat farming filed and apple garden. You will see the first-time Chorten with black, white and red color. And Nilgiri peak continues to dominate the southern skyline. Overnight at guesthouse.

  • Day 5:

    Trek Chele to Syangboche

    From Chele we climb up with the view of Tilicho peak and Yakawa Kang, the climb continues ascending along the site of a spectacular steep canyon to a pass than descend on a pleasant trail to Samar. Again we climb above Samar, after than descend into a large gorge past a Chorten before getting inter another valley and juniper trees. We continue to Syangboche. Overnight at guesthouse.

    Trek Syanboche to Ghami

    From Syangboche walk gently climb up before descending huge valley to Gelling. Trails passing above the Tama Gaun and pass through Nyi la pass 3840m as well. And gently climb down to Ghami which is a big settlement of whitewashed village of Mustang.

    Trek Ghami to Charang

    Today walk pass with soil trail and the magnificent view of the countryside. The gentle contours of the north to the rugged mountain in the east and west are a source of inspiration. Finally at Charang, where a big collection of Thangkas and statues. Overnight at guesthouse.

    Trek Charang to Lo-Manthan

    Trail start short descends down and cross the Tsarang chu. We explore interesting villages and a large monastery. And climb above the valley than see the first beautiful view of the walled city of Lo-Manthan. Lo-Manthan has only one entrance gate on the northeast corner. Overnight at guesthouse

    Explore a day at Lo-Manthan

    Day of exploring and rest time of Mustang trek. You are very free today, you can explore the fascinating city of Lo-Manthan, untouched since the 14th century as you wish. The city with about 150 houses and four major temples. The King Palace is central of city and is occupied by current King and Queen. Overnight same place.

    Trek Lo-Manthan to Dhakmar

    The day starts to climb pass to Morang-la(4300m). This is our highest point for our journey. We explore the monetary some time. And descend down to Dhakmar. Overnight at guesthouse.

    Trek Dhakmar to Gelling

    The trail through ascending and descent with a pretty small and big valley. The villages settlement with white and ochre-painted houses constructed using mud and stone and roofs made of twigs, straw, and a mixture of mud and pebbles. Overnight at guesthouse.

    Trek Chhuksang to Muktinath

    Today we walk to the new rough to Muktinath. Which is a pilgrim peace place for both Hindu and Buddhist, Most Hindu people travel Muktinath just for worship. We explore the holy temple of Muktinath. Overnight at guest house.

    Trek Muktinath to Jomsom

    Trek flow down to Jomsom again and stay at Jomsom. We will pray for good weather to fly on time to Pokhara.

    Fly Jomsom to Pokhara

    We will get ready to fly to Pokhara after good breakfast With a magical view from the sky. Today we have lots of time to explore the Pokhara and do more adventure too. As you wish you can do whatever you want a mountain bike, wood boating at the lake, sightseeing or rest.

    Drive or fly back to Kathmandu

    We drive back to Kathmandu by tourist bus which leaves 7:30 am from Pokhara. It will take 6 to 7 hours. If you want to fly from Pokhara that also possible, but the cost will be extra for flight. Stay at the hotel

    Kathmandu sightseeing

    After a great breakfast, you are ready for the day to do sightseeing. Boudhanath and Pashupatinath, both listed on UNESCO world heritage site. Boudhanath is the world biggest stupa of Buddhist monastery which is a very important pilgrimage site for Buddhist people. Pashupatinath is Hindus temple for Hindu people, especially god Shiva. Where we can see unique cremation of when Hindu people dead. An evening dinner together and hotel

    Departure

    Back home time. We will ready to pick up you at your hotel on your flight schedule and drop your international airport. We will wish you to have a safe journey back to the country.
